Demurrage
After a container has been discharged on board a ship, it may remain free of charge in the port or terminal for a period specified by the shipowner before it is collected for onward transport. As soon as this period is exceeded, so-called demurrage charges are incurred. These are charged per day and container.
The demurrage-free periods vary depending on the country and port, but are usually between 3 and 5 days.
